Enhance Web Security in a Tech-Driven World by Protecting Passwords
In today’s increasingly tech-driven world, privacy and security are important issues worth considering. Websites need to be protected from potential malware threats and backups should be a regular part of this process. In addition, another important aspect of web security falls under the umbrella of client communications. We discuss this in today’s blog post.
Web security for passwords
Email truly is an incredible invention. It provides an easy way to send files and to communicate between two parties or with a group about a specific topic. True, there are many other methods for communication these days…text messaging, phone calls, Slack, Microsoft Teams, social media, Zoom etc. But email is a good safe bet. However, email isn’t always the most secure method for transmitting information…especially passwords or financial data.In order to help with web security while communicating with clients, I encourage the use of sites like Password.Link to add an additional layer of protection for password data. This website allows users to input information in exchange for a one time link. You don’t even have to create an account to use it! This link can be sent on an email, text message etc to the person who needs login access. Once the link is viewed, it becomes void and no-one else can access the info again.
The real beauty of this method of transmitting passwords is its simplicity. It only takes a few additional steps and you’ve made it a little harder for an unauthorized person to get your password. As a side note, I’d recommend only pasting the password itself into the Password.Link site instead of the whole Username / Password / Login URL combination. That way, you’ve separated the PW from the login URL and nobody at Password.Link knows what site the password is connected to.
If you’d like to consider another similar option, check out One Time Secret.
But what about financial information?
Yes, credit card or banking data is especially sensitive information. If you need to share your credit card details with someone, I’d recommend keeping it offline as much as possible and just doing a phone call to give the pertinent numbers over the phone.
In conclusion, password security and internet safety are real issues in everyday life. Keep things simple, but don’t make it easy for unauthorized persons to access your data. Use different passwords for each account you need and start using sites like Password.Link or One Time Secret to share information across the web. As always, stay safe out there, friends!!
