Designers should be recyclers
I’ve always been a saver.
For me, saving things has been a part of life…souvenirs from vacations, leftovers from dinner, fabric/paper scraps I might use for a craft project etc. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed going to secondhand stores and, just recently, I started collecting our family’s aluminum and glass to take to a recycling center.
Now, this all might seem like a random rant, but it’s not. That’s because designers need to be inherent savers. If you will, they should be like pack rats with ideas…finding and stashing them away for a rainy day. As Mark Twain once said,
“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.”
