Technology can drastically change your experience of the internet
It’s true. The technology you use can drastically affect your experience of the internet and all that comes with it…websites, video, graphics and more. As a web designer, it’s important to understand that everyone who views your creation will experience it in a slightly different way.
Yes, I know that this is a given in today’s technology-driven world. I work hard to ensure that my websites look good on a whole variety of screen sizes. Websites are accessed on anything from tiny smartphones to tablets, laptops, giant desktop computers and more.
Not only that, but each person has their own preference as to which internet browser they want to use. Some people like Google Chrome while others like Mozilla Firefox. Still others use Edge or Opera. And others…well, we web designers sigh and shake our heads…use Internet Explorer. Each browser has its own ticks and issues that can make designing for the web more challenging.
There’s another variable, however, that I’m specifically thinking about. It’s internet speed. I recently have gained a new perspective on the blessing of faster, more accessible internet when we got a different internet provider earlier this year. I won’t mention any names, but the provider we had previously was significantly slower and made life on the internet difficult. True, I was able to accomplish what I needed to do, but it was frustrating to say the least. Now, with our faster internet, I am able to fully enjoy the benefits of better download and upload capabilities as well as an improved overall online experience.
All this brings me to say that our experiences of the internet are a priviledge that shouldn’t be taken for granted. In the not too distant past, information was much less accessible and communication took more effort. In some places around the world, accessibility on the web is still difficult. We have a blessing!! Check out the cool graphic below from FastMetrics that can give you an idea of internet speeds around the world.
